Fifty Shades of Green - Pro-people and Pro-planet Sustainable Development Strategy for St. Kitts and Nevis.

Tourism Intelligence International (TII) has done it again! TII recently completed work in the small but awakening tourism giant of St. Kitts, which represents a model for sustainable tourism development that could become an industry 'best practice'. Under the guidance of Managing Director, Dr. Auliana Poon, and with funding provided by the European Union, Tourism Intelligence International has crafted what it calls the Pro-People, Pro-Planet Strategy for Sustainable Tourism Development in St. Kitts.

The strategy is dubbed Pro-People, Pro-Planet because with a population of a mere 50,000 people, every individual has a critical role to play in building the industry that represents the pulse of the nation. Similarly, St. Kitts boasts sensitive eco-systems like world famous dive sites, rain forests and natural salt ponds, all of which could be ruined, if development is not properly managed. Thus, if its people are not encouraged to take ownership of the island's tourism product while simultaneously protecting their natural environment, St. Kitts may never realize its true potential.

The Strategy is also Pro-People because while the majority of all visitors to St. Kitts claim that friendly people is a key reason for visiting the destination, St. Kitts, like the rest of the Caribbean, cannot compete on Sun, Sand, Sea and Smiles alone. It is the knowledgeable, capable, confident, caring and creative people that will generate the true competitive success of the industry.  Being Pro-People involves building capacity among local people and forging partnerships, and participation with local communities, for which a model of public, private and community partnerships (PPCP) has been proposed.

The Strategy was developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, private sector stakeholders, NGOs and many others including Monkey vendors. At a National Consultation on the Tourism Development Strategy facilitated by TII on March 25, 2013, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Ricky Skerritt informed stakeholders that the research conducted by Dr. Poon involved suggestions on how to enhance the tourism product of the island and grow tourism, and addressed issues such as human resource development, the environment and local culture.

On the Island of Nevis (a 15 minute boat ride from St. Kitts), consultations with the Honourable Mark A. Brantley confirms the intent of Nevis to 'stay different' from St. Kitts, avoiding the large cruise ships and the ubiquitous hotel chains and franchises.  TII proposes that it is the reinforced differences between the islands that will generate the greatest source of  comparative and competitive advantage of the twin island state of St. Kitts and Nevis.

So convinced is TII of the true potential of St. Kitts and Nevis and the chances for a sustainable tourism sector using the Pro-People, Pro-Planet strategy of development, that TII proposed the positioning of the islands as 'Fifty Shades of Green'.

Forever Fifty Shades of Green - Atop the St. Kitts Volcano Liamuiga

In fact, the laws in St. Kits and Nevis prevents the development of man-made structures above the 1000 feet line.  Such a commitment will ensure that St. Kitts and Nevis remains forever Fifty Shades of Green.

For more than 20 years, Tourism Intelligence International has been providing consultancy services to both government and private sector organisations around the world. So whether its rebranding a mega destination like Abu Dhabi in the Middle East, crafting the Tourism Begins at Home Strategy to turnaround tourism in The Bahamas, or developing the Responsible Tourism Strategy for South Africa, TII has the knowledge, skills and expertise to deliver.

Tourism Intelligence International enjoys a worldwide reputation for the quality of research, analysis, advice and strategic planning in the field of international travel and tourism. TII insist that good intelligence must lead to practical advice, clever competitive strategies, and innovative solutions to well-defined problems and guidelines to put them in place.

More than just providing advice, TII also offers practical and innovative solutions to the travel and hospitality sector.  In 1998, TII developed a high-end, villa property in Tobago - Villa Being, offering guests a slice of heaven and an opportunity to become one with nature.  Through this villa, TII is demonstrating what it means to be truly sustainable.  And in 2008, through its sister company, Being Sustainable, TII launched a line of sustainable outdoor furniture made from recycled plastic milk bottles.  This outdoor furniture looks and feels like wood but it is not.  Even more interesting, this elegant and environmentally line of sustainable furniture is durable and significantly reduces maintenance cost.  TII does not just talk the talk but also walks the walk

TII is truly consultancy with a conscience!

Sustainability is Sexy - the Art of Being.

Looking for a unique Caribbean holiday experience that is rejuvenating, peaceful, private, romantic, sensual, fun, stylish and sexy? Then Villa Being, Tobago is the place to BE.

As you may know, we have been working on perfecting the Art of Being - Creating the Ultimate Cure to the Common Holiday by marrying sustainability with elegance and sexiness.  We believe that we have come close.

Have a look for yourself at the short video of Villa Being in Tobago:

Being is located in one of Tobago’s most picturesque locations - Arnos Vale.  It is on a five-acre organic fruit estate, offering breath-taking, 180-degree views of the Caribbean Sea.   Being is built to allow guests to have a sensual experience of nature.  There are astonishing views of the Caribbean Sea everywhere – from every room, nook or spot be it the bedrooms, patios, dining or living spaces.  Even the bathrooms and showers are designed to bring the outdoors in. Vistas of the sunrise and sunset, moonrise and moonset can be appreciated from virtually anywhere on the property.

Being is not only High on Elegance, we are also High on Sustainability.

We offer true Sustainable Elegance, featuring 100% local TALENT (architects, engineers, designers, landscapers, cooks, massage therapists and more); 100% local ingredients; organic agriculture; ‘no artificial ingredients’; and we recycle and reuse.  Even our elegant outdoor furniture, that stay outdoors year-round (cushions and all), are made from recycled plastic milk bottles!

At Being we take pride and joy in being able to create opportunities for our partners in the local community of Plymouth.  From our chef, Elroy to John our masseur, we outsource all of our services as a means of offering community members a chance to benefit from tourism for real. And we allow them to enjoy 100% of the revenues they receive from guests. We neither charge them a fee for using our facilities nor a commission on their services.  We provide live and direct exposure and 'market access' for their products.  The Result: our guests are happy; our partners in the local community are happy; so therefore, we are happy! And Happiness equals profitability.

But sustainability does not stop there.  Take Terrence, our gardener, for instance.  We were able to help him start his own lawn cutting business by purchasing a weed whacker for him for which he repaid on flexible terms at no interest.  He was also given the opportunity to use the villa's van at zero cost to be able to carry out his activities.  The van was later sold to him through an interest free loan provided by the company.  Today, Terrance owns his own vehicle, owns his own business, has just completed building his house and has a team of employees working for him in his business.  Now THAT is sustainability!

Villa Being, Tobago

Villa Being also worked closely with our local Tobago community in Plymouth to develop “Street Beat”, an event that celebrated local talent but also show community members in a practical way how they can benefit from tourism, enhance Tobago’s offerings and create an unique island and community experience for visitors.  Street Beat is a fine example of public sector, private sector and community partnership (PPCP) for progress.

In addition, at Villa Being, there are no artificial ingredients.  Our cleaning chemicals, building materials and décor are 100% eco-friendly; our fruit estate is 100% organic; the architecture, design, art and engineering are 100% Caribbean and the people are 100% local.

So, if you are looking for a unique villa holiday experience in Tobago that is rejuvenating, peaceful, private, romantic, sensual, fun, stylish, sustainable and sexy then Being is the place to BE.

But don't just take our word for it.  We were featured in many travel reports including Playboy, Financial Times How to Spend it, Island Life, Maco We were even covered in a full page in London's Observer Newspaper (download these press articles here): http://being-tobago.com/about-us/archives/

According to – Playboy Magazine, USA. “…you won’t find a more spectacular retreat than Villa Being”

According to Private World, London, “Being is an inspiring property, at one with the sea, sky, sun, and setting.  It feels crisp, fresh and uncluttered, secluded, relaxing, even meditative in ambience. This is the most original escape in the Caribbean”.
